“The most common offenders and areas with a high rate of crime are in urban centres such as Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney and Adelaide,” the police say.
“In many instances these areas are also known for a low level of personal safety.”
Police say people should “consider their own risk” in their areas of choice.
Police say crime is high in some areas of Australia but they are not sure what is driving the problem.
“There are a number or areas of high (crime) in some of these areas, which has led to some of the most serious crimes of our time,” the report says.
“Some areas have seen a high number of crimes in recent years, such as murder, sexual assault and robbery, while others have seen low crime rates in recent times, such like burglary and drug dealing.”
Police have also been asked to share their crime data with them.
